LG Changes the Dynamics of TV Market with
OLED TV, ULTRA HD TV and webOS Smart TV Products

The newly installed president of LG Electronics’ (LG) Home Entertainment Company plans to change the dynamics of the current TV market, capitalizing on LG’s early leadership in OLED TV technology and manufacturing. At the same time, HE Company president and CEO H.H. (Hyun-hwoi) Ha plans to expand the company’s ULTRA HD TV and Smart TV offerings with a wider range of products that push the boundaries of innovation.

Using the accompanying remote, the curvature of the Flexible OLED TV display can be alteredto suit the viewing situation and environment, such as number of viewers and viewing distance. Since the curvature is adjustable, audiences can enjoy the best TV viewing experience possible.

Complementing the company’s existing 55-inch CURVED OLED TV are two new products measuring 65 inches and 77 inches, measured diagonally with Ultra HD high resolution. The expanded range of superbly crafted OLED TVs emphasizes LG’s leadership in the next generation TV market.

What’s more, LG has established a global OLED TV manufacturing network with facilities located in key regions around the world. Production is already underway at LG’s newly constructed plants in Brazil, China, Poland and Thailand with the facility in Mexico to begin supplying OLED TVs to the North American market this year.

On the content side, LG has formed strategic alliances with domestic and international broadcast TV and cable companies to co-develop 4K content. Globally, LG is focused on supplying Ultra HD content by cooperating with a number of established content providers such as Netflix and YouTube.

webOS, Differentiated User Experience
Launching this year, LG’s webOS platform will introduce consumers to the smoothest, most convenient smart TV user experience yet. Making TV simple again, the exciting new platform represents the development and design expertise of LG’s innovative Smart TV division.

webOS-based LG Smart TVs deliver a greater degree of freedom than previous TVs. In addition, the initial setup process is fun and easy to follow, without the normally cumbersome and complicated task of activating the TV.

Samsungs official response to recent article on KNOX vulnerability

Samsung has collaborated with Google to produce the following public response to the recent report from Ben-Gurion University researchers on a vulnerability in Samsung KNOX.

Recently, there have been reports that security researchers from Ben-Gurion University Cyber Security Labs found a vulnerability on a Samsung Galaxy S4 device with the KNOX security platform.

After discussing the research with the original researchers, Samsung has verified that the exploit uses legitimate Android network functions in an unintended way to intercept unencrypted network connections from/to applications on the mobile device. This research did not identify a flaw or bug in Samsung KNOX or Android; it demonstrated a classic Man in the Middle (MitM) attack, which is possible at any point on the network to see unencrypted application data. The research specifically showed this is also possible via a user-installed program, reaffirming the importance of encrypting application data before sending it to the Internet.  Android development practices encourage that this be done by each application using SSL/TLS. Where thats not possible (for example, to support standards-based unencrypted protocols, such as HTTP), Android provides built-in VPN and support for third-party VPN solutions to protect data. Use of either of those standard security technologies would have prevented an attack based on a user-installed local application.

KNOX offers additional protections against MitM attacks. Below is a more detailed description of the mechanisms that can be configured on Samsung KNOX devices to protect against them:

1.    Mobile Device Management — MDM is a feature that ensures that a device containing sensitive information is set up correctly according to an enterprise-specified policy and is available in the standard Android platform. KNOX enhances the platform by adding many additional policy settings, including the ability to lock down security-sensitive device settings.  With an MDM configured device, when the attack tries to change these settings, the MDM agent running on the device would have blocked them. In that case, the exploit would not have worked.

2.    Per-App VPN — The per-app VPN feature of KNOX allows traffic only from a designated and secured application to be sent through the VPN tunnel. This feature can be selectively applied to applications in containers, allowing fine-grained control over the tradeoff between communication overhead and security.

3.    FIPS 140-2 — KNOX implements a FIPS 140-2 Level 1 certified VPN client, a NIST standard for data-in-transit protection along with NSA suite B cryptography. The FIPS 140-2 standard applies to all federal agencies that use cryptographically strong security systems to protect sensitive information in computer and telecommunication systems.  Many enterprises today deploy this cryptographically strong VPN support to protect against data-in-transit attacks.

Professor Patrick Traynor at Georgia Institute of Technology, an expert on mobile security, previously expressed concerns about the finding by the researchers as reported in the Wall Street Journal article. After examining additional details about KNOX, Professor Traynor said, "Proper configuration of mechanisms available within KNOX appears to be able to address the previously published issue. Samsung should strongly encourage all of their users to take advantage of those mechanisms to avoid this and other common security issues."

As a final note, we encourage all researchers to contact the Samsung KNOX team at help@samsungknox.com immediately with security issues related to KNOX. More information about Samsung KNOX can be found at www.samsungknox.com.

SEE ME THE SURPRISING HISTORY OF THE SELFIE

Amazingly Instagram’s 150 million users have taken 35 million posts containing the hashtag #selfie.

It’s no wonder then that there’s been a lot of talk recently about how self obsessed we’ve all become. Amazing smartphone camera technology, like that found on your Nokia Lumia, and social media sites have doubtlessly increased our ability to disseminate images of ourselves. But haven’t we humans always had a tendency to navel gaze?

2013 and the selfie

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word selfie first appeared in September 13, 2002 on the ABC online forum in Australia. However it seems Selfie first popped into the public consciousness way back in 2004 on the photo sharing site Flickr. But it took until 2012 before it really spread into a wider, generally used word.
historyoftheselfie2013 saw the Oxford English Dictionary vote ‘selfie’ as it’s Word of the Year. (‘Twerk’ and ‘Binge-Watching’ filling in the other top spots). Supposedly, use of the word selfie has increased 17,000% in a year! Now, whilst that sounds like an unfeasibly large number grabbed randomly out of thin air, apparently, the OED uses a research programme that collects 150 million words used in English texts from around the web each month. The software can then pinpoint the emergence of new words and their frequency of use.
However, not everyone was so pleased with such vocabulary; Time Magazine readers voted ‘selfie’ third in The Things You Never Want to Hear Again Poll.

Turning the easel on yourself

Whilst people have always made depictions of other people it probably wasn’t until the 15th century that the first true self-portrait was made. (Before this artists had often sneakily included themselves in the backgrounds of other paintings). Key to this was the development of better reflective surfaces and the availability of mirrors. Flemish painter Jan van Eyck’s ‘Portrait of a Man in a Turban’ (1433) is possibly one of the earliest examples of painted self-portraiture. Albrecht Durer (1471 – 1528) was well known for his self portraits, producing his first at the age of 13 and continuing to make representations of himself throughout his life.
historyoftheselfie2
But it is of course with Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) that we think of the art of self-portraiture really appearing. Like Durer, Rembrandt repeatedly painted himself and showed the self portrait to be a worthy art form. Since then, nearly all painters have experimented with self-portraiture – even those whose ‘normal’ work is totally abstract.
Nokia Rembrandt selfies

The camera points at the photographer

It wasn’t until 1839 that the first photographic self-portrait appeared. Robert Cornelius (1809 – 1893), an American with a strong interest in chemistry and metallurgy, started out to perfect the art of Daguerreotype and ended up with a place in history as creating the first ever selfie.
first photo selfie RobertCorneliusAs with painting, since that first selfie in 1839, photographers have often used themselves as subject matter for their photos. Famously, (from 1976 onwards) Cindy Sherman has used herself as the subject of nearly all of her work. In the seminal ‘Film Stills’ series (1977-1980) she depicted herself in a variety of roles and settings. Each single image alluded to a longer narrative and had the feel of 1950s American Film Noir cinema. All of the images remained ‘Untitled’ to avoid directing the viewer in their interpretation of the scene.

Celebrity selfies and faking history

historyofselfie6Recent times have seen everyone from the Pope to the rulers of the world’s most powerful countries to astronauts taking selfies. (Or being photographed by others taking selfies). And such is the currency of selfies, that artists with a sense of humour have taken to making fake selfies out of other pictures.
So, while the selfie may seem like a very modern phenomenon it actually has a long and illustrious history. Questions is, does that make you love it any more or are you someone who’d rather not suffer a selfie? As ever, we’d love to know your thoughts down below.

Sony also underlined its commitment to the rapidly evolving wearable technology market. In addition to smartphones, Sony is outlining its new SmartWear Experience vision – an upcoming range of SmartWear products, with Xperia smartphones, and a new Lifelog application.

Standing for flexibility, the first product in the range is “SmartBand”. It offers life empowerment by logging daily activities and representing them visually in Sony’s Lifelog application: users can reminisce at the past, make the best of the present and plan for the future.

Life is more than the number of steps you take – the SmartWear Experience is about emotion as well as motion. Entertainment and information; how you feel as well as what you do. It’s about moving, and most importantly, being moved.

And, with open software and hardware, Sony is forging new in-market partnerships, to offer consumers more choice. Further details will follow in the coming weeks.

Sony is already a category leader in wearable technology, with the recently launched SmartWatch 2, a sleek and capable companion device that works with Android smartphones from all manufacturers, already selling beyond expectations. Today Sony announced updates and additional applications for SmartWatch 2 – bringing the total to over 300 compatible applications, with many more in the pipeline thanks to a vibrant developer community using the open development platform supporting the device.

Sony also announces an addition to the family of 132 NFC-enabled accessories with the new ‘one-touch’ pairing Stereo Bluetooth headset in a stylish and splash proof neckband-style design.  The Bluetooth wireless headset SBH-80 supports NFC, HD Voice and aptX, and features convenient controls for enjoying music as well as hands-free call handling.
