The newly installed president of LG Electronics’ (LG) Home Entertainment Company plans to change the dynamics of the current TV market, capitalizing on LG’s early leadership in OLED TV technology and manufacturing. At the same time, HE Company president and CEO H.H. (Hyun-hwoi) Ha plans to expand the company’s ULTRA HD TV and Smart TV offerings with a wider range of products that push the boundaries of innovation.

“It has been widely predicted that 2014 will be the year that the OLED TV market will finally take off. With a solid foundation of R&D and the establishment of advanced manufacturing facilities in strategic countries around the globe, we are confident that LG can and will drive the market for OLED TVs going forward,” said Mr. Ha. “This year will also see the launch of outstanding new ULTRA HD TVs and Smart TVs from LG, highlighted by our new webOS platform which will demonstrate how truly smart a smart TV can be.”

OLED TV
With the introduction of its Flexible OLED TV, LG has now achieved a major grand slam, having introduced its share of world firsts in the OLED TV space— flat, curved andnow flexible. Using the accompanying remote, the curvature of the Flexible OLED TV display can be alteredto suit the viewing situation and environment, such as number of viewers and viewing distance. Since the curvature is adjustable, audiences can enjoy the best TV viewing experience possible.

Complementing the company’s existing 55-inch CURVED OLED TV are two new products measuring 65 inches and 77 inches, measured diagonally with Ultra HD high resolution. The expanded range of superbly crafted OLED TVs emphasizes LG’s leadership in the next generation TV market.

What’s more, LG has established a global OLED TV manufacturing network with facilities located in key regions around the world. Production is already underway at LG’s newly constructed plants in Brazil, China, Poland and Thailand with the facility in Mexico to begin supplying OLED TVs to the North American market this year.

ULTRA HD TV
LG is looking to drive the Ultra HD TV market with a full lineup of models ranging in size from a 49 inches to a groundbreaking 105 inches. The company’s comprehensive selection of premium ULTRA HD units offers unmatched picture quality, differentiated features and stunning designs. LG is also introducing more affordable TV products, enabling a wider audience to enjoy the incredible immersive qualities of 4K entertainment.

On the content side, LG has formed strategic alliances with domestic and international broadcast TV and cable companies to co-develop 4K content. Globally, LG is focused on supplying Ultra HD content by cooperating with a number of established content providers such as Netflix and YouTube.

webOS, Differentiated User Experience
Launching this year, LG’s webOS platform will introduce consumers to the smoothest, most convenient smart TV user experience yet. Making TV simple again, the exciting new platform represents the development and design expertise of LG’s innovative Smart TV division.

webOS-based LG Smart TVs deliver a greater degree of freedom than previous TVs. For example, users can easily search and enjoy YouTube content or conduct an internet search while watching broadcast TV —all with just one or two clicks of the Magic Remote. In addition, the initial setup process is fun and easy to follow, without the normally cumbersome and complicated task of activating the TV.

The global rollout of webOS enabled LG Smart TVs will commence in the first half of 2014 starting in Korea and then expands to other regions.

Qualcomm Announces New Ultra HD Processor for TVs and Set Top Boxes

Qualcomm Snapdragon 802 Processor Powers Smarter TV experiences at Ultra HD Resolution, Redefining the Connected Living Room Experience

Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., has introduced the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 802 processor, the first fully integrated system-on-a-chip (SoC) designed for next-generation smart TVs, smart set-top boxes and smart digital media adapters.

The Snapdragon 802 processor is designed to power the latest smart TV experiences at Ultra HD resolution, including seamless decoding of Ultra HD video content, rich user interfaces, and console-quality gaming. Its high performance, power-efficient design enables the Snapdragon 802 processor to deliver advanced, concurrent use cases, such as playing an online game while video conferencing; browsing the web while streaming a movie; simultaneously playing back up to four HD videos on the same TV; or sharing with your friends and family by sending wirelessly to other connected mobile devices. Advanced content protection with integrated Snapdragon StudioAccess™ is designed to ensure that premium content can be enjoyed securely on Snapdragon 802-enabled devices.

“In addition to offering our expertise in the smartphone space, we also are introducing capabilities specific to the smart TV space, which enable our customers to redefine the smart TV category by combining the best of both TV and smartphone experiences,” said Murthy Renduchintala, executive vice president of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., and co-president of QCT. “Combining the efficient integration of our Snapdragon processing and connectivity components with Qualcomm Technologies’ demonstrated expertise in Android will enable the ultimate home entertainment experience with compelling new ways to watch, play and interact.”

The Snapdragon 802 processor includes features developed by Qualcomm Technologies specifically for TVs, such as broadcast, analog and digital I/O interfaces, as well as a custom Android Software Framework based on Kit Kat that is designed to enable our OEM customers to develop performance and media optimized Android solutions for smart consumer electronic devices.

Qualcomm Technologies has achieved superior processing performance with the Snapdragon 802 processor through the unique and efficient integration of its custom-designed processing components, including Qualcomm Technologies’ heterogeneous computing architecture. The Snapdragon 802 processor features a quad core Krait 1.8 GHz CPU and powerful Adreno 330 GPU. The high quality directional scaling and resolution enhancement of Qualcomm Technologies’ Hollywood Quality Video (HQV) processing engine allow up-converted 1080p content to be delivered at a level approaching Ultra HD. The dedicated, low-power, Hexagon DSP provides efficient processing for Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound and also enables OEMs to add custom features, such as audio control, gestures and facial recognition. Qualcomm Technologies’ heterogeneous compute architecture also plays a role in ensuring that these various components are used as efficiently as possible, individually and together, to enable high performance, concurrent use cases within the power and thermal budgets of consumer electronics devices.

The Snapdragon 802 processor platform delivers leading connectivity as well, featuring Qualcomm Technologies’ state-of-the-art 2-stream, dual-band Qualcomm® VIVE™ 802.11ac, which enables ultra-high Wi-Fi capacity for seamless streaming and fast transmission of large files. Dual-band (2.4 and 5GHz) support enables smooth, uninterrupted HD video transmissions and other latency-sensitive content. The AllJoyn™ software connectivity framework also is integrated and ships with the Snapdragon 802 processor. Initially developed by Qualcomm Innovation Center, Inc., AllJoyn™ has been contributed to the AllSeen Alliance for wider adoption across the Internet of Everything. The AllJoyn framework provides interoperability for TVs powered by the Snapdragon 802 processor with other connected products and multiscreen software applications, including multiplayer gaming, social media sharing and multiuser productivity tools.

The Snapdragon 802 processor will begin sampling early this year and is expected to be in commercial devices by late 2014.
