Sony Jumps Into Fitness Trackers With Core SmartBand

Sony on Monday unveiled a new wearable device: a fitness tracker called Core, which fits into other accessories such as a SmartBand. The device integrates with an app called Lifelog, which Sony hopes to build into a platform.

Sony Mobile CEO Kunimasa Suzuki unveiled the Core and SmartBand at the companys CES press conference, calling it possibly the smallest device Sony has ever made. While his presentation was scant on details, he showed a demo of the Lifelog app tracking steps taken, calories burned and other typical fitness-tracker fare.

When worn on the wrist, the Core/SmartBand is intended to be a simpler, more specialized product than Sonys SmartWatch. Sony also showed off a few different wearables, such as a lanyard and bulkier bracelets.

But its the Lifelog platform that received the most attention: Sony aims to make it into an open platform, and it looks to record more than just steps. Sony says that the Core, along with a phone, can actually tell when youre commuting and what kind of vehicle youre in. Sony also aims to create a whole Core ecosystem, with both software and hardware partnerships, to build "a series of exciting and fashionable" products.

Sony plans to launch the SmartBand this spring. No pricing was announced.
