What̢۪s new in 2014 a year of technology

What’s new in 2014...
Have we reached the point of diminishing returns?

With 2013 now behind us, I want to look back upon the past year and analyse the technology we saw, as well as speculate upon what we are likely to see this year. I think 2013 was a relatively disappointing year for mobile phones, however 2014 looks more promising.

Displays of 2013

For many, 2013 will be known as ‘the year of 1080p screens’, as almost every flagship model incorporated these high resolution displays at the cost of battery life and overall fluidity. This meant that overall performance seemed stagnated in general operations, with the HTC One X rarely under performing to the HTC One, except in gaming performance. 

However, the benefits of a 1080p screen as compared to a lower resolution are noticeable to most and definitely offer an improved experience, resulting in less eyestrain and the ability to browse the web more elegantly. Of course, not every 1080p screen is equal. We saw improvements in colour reproduction, brightness and touch sensitivity in 2013, as well as advancements in technologies like AMOLED. With Apple retaining it’s sub-720p display on the iPhone 5S, many agreed that this was subpar and that this will need to be improved upon in 2014, else market share will suffer. The Xperia Z was widely criticised for its poor viewing angles, resulting in poor sales despite otherwise quality hardware. This shows the great importance of a quality screen in the current market. Display size in 2013 saw a huge increase from previous years. In 2010 for instance, the display of the iPhone 4 at 3.5 inches was considered large. By 2011, the Galaxy S2 had upped this to a 4.2” screen, and in 2012 the Galaxy S3 was released with an even larger 4.8” screen. 2013 can be known as the ‘phablet year’, with a large number of phones released with a screen size larger than 5 inches. This is a trend on the rise and I believe that in 2014, any screen with a size less than 5” will be regarded as ‘small’.

Displays of 2014

In 2014, many smartphones are rumoured to be incorporating WQHD screens, with a resolution of 2560 x 1440. This is a resolution higher than most laptops on the market and seems to be overkill for a screen so small. The benefits of 1080p were visible, but with another resolution jump, the impacts on performance and battery life dont seem justified. A 1080p screen seems pin sharp and any higher may truly be more pixels than the eye can distinguish. This year in the television industry, there will be a major focus on OLED displays, due to their superior black levels, brighter whites and fast refresh rates. However, in the mobile industry I believe that LCD will still dominate, due to a cheaper cost and advancing technologies allowing for higher resolutions on a thinner screen. Only Samsung and Nokia are currently utilising OLED screens and while they are praised for their colour saturation and black levels, many argue that the colour is not reproduced accurately and that the Pentile matrix of Samsung’s latest screens means that they are not at true 1080p. OLED displays also commonly have a tint, resulting in darker, less pure whites. The S4 for instance has a clear blue/green tint when compared to the HTC One which uses an LCD. To conclude, I believe that in 2014, 1080p will be the standard resolution for most phones, with a few rising to 2560 x 1440. The benefits of this are yet to be determined. Screen sizes in 2014 will be 5” or above for flagship devices, with the Galaxy Note series increasing to around 5.9”.


Batteries of 2013

In any portable device, battery life is a major concern and in mobile phones, this has an even greater importance. Over the past few years, battery life hasnt really improved. This isnt due to the non advancement of battery technology, but more due to the increased power usage of components in phones, with the latest screens and SoCs using more power than they did a couple of years ago. This creates the illusion that the batteries used are exactly the same as those used in 2011, while really they are advancing at a steady pace. For example, the HTC Desire (was one of the highest rated phones of 2010) utilised a 1400 MaH battery, while the HTC One uses a 2300 MaH battery. With 900 MaH extra capacity, the HTC One should have greatly improved battery life, while in reality it is not much different. This is because of the more power hungry components. One anomaly in 2013 was the iPhone 5S, which uses a 1570 MaH battery. This is far lower than other flagship phones on the market yet still manages to provide a days usage. This is due to the less demanding processor, as well as software optimisation in the closed Apple ecosystem. The drawback of current batteries is that they are still too large. To include a large 3,200 MaH battery such as the one found in the Galaxy Note 3 requires… you guessed it, a phone the size of a Galaxy Note 3. This means that phones cannot continue to get much thinner with the current generation of batteries, else battery life will suffer. 

Batteries of 2014

Phones released in 2014 will have a healthy bump in MaH as compared to 2013, however we shouldnt expect to see a noticeable difference in usage times, due to the impending release of WQHD displays and even beefier processors. I believe MaH will hover around the 3000 MaH range for flagships this year, with phablets potentially pushing towards the 4000 MaH mark. A day of solid usage can be expected. One thing that split opinions in 2013 was the issue of the removable battery. It was argued that it was required in order to switch batteries when the original had lost charge through age and that non-inclusion was a type of planned obsolescence. Others argued that many don’t keep a phone for longer than 2 years and that in this time, a battery would still maintain at least 75% of the original charge. Personally, I find a removable battery useless for my needs and think that the design changes required to incorporate one are detrimental to the looks of the phone. I would take a well built solid unibody phone over one with a removable flimsy back cover any-day. In fact, a removable battery just seems so old school, Nokia 3310 anyone? In 2014, unibody phones will be standard.


Cameras of 2013

In 2013, DSLR sales suffered. This was mainly due to the increasingly good picture quality on mobile phones. While professional photographers can’t sell their professional equipment yet, for many users a mobile phone camera is more than sufficient. Cameras in 2013 saw resolutions as high as 13 megapixels, while some manufacturers decided to go in the other direction: reducing the number pixels in return for better low light photos and less noise. There is split opinion on the effectiveness of this strategy. Personally I prefer the photos taken from the standard 8 megapixel HTC One X camera than those taken from a 4 megapixel HTC One, with 2um pixels (‘Ultrapixels’). The 13 megapixel camera of the Galaxy S4 can take some great shots, however colours are too processed and noise is an issue with such a small sensor. Overall, I think that the greatest camera of 2013 was that on the iPhone 5S, which features an 8 megapixel shooter with larger pixels like seen on the HTC One. This allows for good sharpness while also reducing noise. Mobile phone cameras now have a number of quality features that even DSLRs can’t match, such as high quality slow motion video, 4K video recording and options to remove unwanted objects from an image with a simple tap. Shooting speeds also dramatically increased from 2012, with speeds of up to 10 photos per second. 

Cameras of 2014

I think that this larger pixel technology will be seen more often in 2014, with HTC and Apple likely to continue the trend. However, I wouldn’t expect to see Samsung attempt this. In fact, a 16 megapixel camera on the Galaxy S5 wouldnt surprise me. HTC will likely release an 8 megapixel ultrapixel camera, while Apple could either remain at 8 megapixel or jump to 13. Expect to see an improvement in editing options this year, as well as the rise of 4K video. Optical image stabilisation will also be included in most of the flagship devices, as this removes camera shake from photos, meaning that photos taken with a non steady hand or on the move won’t be blurred.

An 8MP camera with 2um pixels will require a phone to be 18mm thick at the camera site; not sure if any manufacturer will go there. Check out this article for more details - Cameras in Phones - what do we really need?


Processors of 2013

Qualcomm dominated 2013 with their Snapdragon range. In fact, every Android flagship of 2013 used a variant of a Snapdragon processor, with the exception of the 8-Core Exynos processor used in certain non-European models of the Galaxy S4. The first 64 bit mobile processor came in 2013 with the launch of the Apple A7. This offers certain improvements, such as a 25% performance increase just for apps that are compiled in 64bit, as well as being able to handle more RAM for the future. Processors have reached the stage where most activities on a device are fluid and apps launch very quickly. The GPU on a SoC matters more, as this determines gaming quality and can affect the FPS of general device navigation and scrolling. The Snapdragon 800 and Apple A7 are very fast CPUs. An interesting point is that while all Android flagships used a quad core CPU in 2013, Apple only used a dual core. The dual core A7 even outperforms the quad core Snapdragon 800. This is due to the ARMv8 internals of the chip. Every processor currently used in Android devices is ARMv7 or less. ARMv8 offers a number of improvements including 64 bit support, faster handling of encryption and an increased number of registers.

Processors of 2014

Currently, the Snapdragon 805 is expected to be released in the first quarter of 2014. This is known to have a maximum clock speed of 2.5GHz and an Adreno 420 GPU. However, it is still based on ARMv7, meaning it is 32 bit. This means that Qualcomm is actively slowing down the development of ARMv8, even with ARMv7 currently at the end of its cycle. I expect to see an ARMv8 processor from Qualcomm towards the end of 2014. Processors will remain at quad-core for the most part and I expect Apple to keep its dual core set up which has proven itself as a great performer.

Motorola Mobility via press release (26/07) unveiled its latest smartphone Motoluxe labeled XT685 in China. IDC Tablet Delivery in Year 2016 Reach 222 1 Million Units



Given the high demand for tablet on the second half of 2012 which exceeds previous estimates, the market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) has increased the estimated delivery tablet of 106.1 million units to 107.4 million units.

In a press release, Apple stated if the tablet is known as the iPad will still lead the market which stood at around 62.5% market share, an increase from the previous year which stood at 58.2%.

While Androids market share is expected to decline slightly from 38.7% in the year 2011 will be 36.5% in 2012.

Furthermore, IDC also revised its forecast for 2013 from 137.4 million units to 142.8 million units. While the tablet shipments in 2016 is expected to reach 222.1 million units.

"Demand remains strong for the tablet, and we see an increasing interest in the category of the commercial side," said Tom Mainelli, research director, IDC Mobile Device Connected.

Tom Mainelli is also estimated that delays in new products from major players, the main device that will increase affordable. The large-scale promotional activities of Microsoft said about Windows 8 will lead to greater interest in the category until the end of this year.

HP ships an Android all in one PC plus several business laptops and desktops

LAS VEGAS—It seems like a bit of a disconnect for HP to announce new commercial PCs at a trade show focused on consumer electronics, but HP—which didn’t book exhibit space at this years CES—is wise not to waste the opportunity.
The company unveiled seven new products Sunday evening, including its first all-in-one that runs the Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) operating system instead of Windows. HP is positioning the Slate 21 Pro AiO as an everyday business machine that also has applications in the education and hospitality markets.

HPs Slate 21 Pro all-in-one runs Android, but you can also use it as a touchscreen display for a Windows PC. 
The Slate 21 Pro is powered by a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 4 processor, 2GB of DDR3/800 memory, and 16GB of eMMC flash storage. Its 21.5-inch IPS optical touchscreen (two touch points and three cameras) has a native resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels. The all-in-one also comes with an HDMI input and can be used as a display for another computer, such as a laptop. Connect a USB cable and you can control the computer using the Slate 21 Pro’s touchscreen.
The Slate 21 Pro will have three USB 2.0 ports, one USB 2.0 upstream port, an SD media card reader, and a 720p webcam and mic. Its networking capabilities include an onboard 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi adapter and 10/100 mb/s wired Ethernet. HP envisions buyers using cloud-based applications such as Google Docs but the company is also bundling a number of first- and third-party apps with the machine. These include the HP File Manager and copies of Kingsoft Office, Evernote, Hulu Plus, Skype, and Box (with 50GB of free cloud storage).
Citrix XenMobile and Citrix Receiver are preinstalled, so that enterprise buyers can deploy the Slate 21 Pro as a smart thin client. With these apps, users can run Windows apps in a virtual workspace running on a remote server. For deployments in classroom environments, HP will also provide the student version of its Classroom Manager software.
HP says the Slate 21 Pro is available now at prices starting at $399, including a wired keyboard and mouse.
The rest of the lineup HP announced tonight are all Windows machines. 

HP ProOne 400 AiO and HP 205 AiO

The HP ProOne 400 all-in-one PC will have a 19.5-inch display with native resolution of 1600 by 900 pixels (in touch- and non-touch configurations). The computer will be powered by a fourth-generation Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 processor and up to 16GB of DDR3/1600 memory, and will have up to 2TB of storage (options include mechanical, hybrid, and self-encrypting solid-sate drives). Several optical drive options are available, including none at all, a simple DVD reader, or a Blu-ray burner.

The HP ProOne 400 is available in touch and non-touch configurations, with prices starting at $649. 
The machine has two USB 3.0 and four USB 2.0 ports, DisplayPort 1.2 with multi-streaming (to drive up to two additional displays), gigabit Ethernet, dual-band 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and—to support legacy hardware—an RS-232 serial port (betcha haven’t seen one of those in a while). Prices for the HP ProOne 400 start at $649 (non-touch) and $799 (touch); both machines are available now.
HP is targeting the low-cost HP 205 AiO squarely at the small end of the SMB market. This desktop computer is powered by a dual-core AMD E1-2500 processor, 4 or 8GB of DDR3/1600 memory, and a 500MB, 1TB, or 2TB 7200 rpm hard drive. Its 18.5-inch non-touch display delivers native resolution of 1366 by 768 pixels and is driven by integrated AMD Radeon HD 8240 graphics. I/O ports include two USB 2.0 and four USB 3.0, a 7-in-1 memory-card reader, a 10/100 mb/s Ethernet adapter, an optional 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi adapter, and a 720p webcam. The HP 205 is available now and starts at $449.

If that’s still too rich for your blood, the HP 200 Microtower will be available March 5 at prices starting at $349. But you’ll need to provide your own monitor.
Processor choices range from a dual-core Intel Celeron J1750 to a quad-core Intel Pentium J2850, with base configurations coming with just 2GB of DDR3/1600 memory (you can also order one with 4- or 8GB of memory).
With specs like that, this machine won’t break any benchmark records, but if your needs are modest, it sounds like a decent computer for the price.

HP Pro x2 410 and HP 350 G1 notebooks

HP also announced two new commercial notebooks at CES: the HP Pro x2 410 and the HP 350 G1. The former is a 2-in-1 design with an 11.6-inch, 1366 by 768-pixel display that detaches from its keyboard dock.

It’s available with either a fourth-generation Intel Core i3 or i5 processor; 4GB of DDR3/1600 memory; and a 64, 128, or 256GB SSD. The laptop has an Intel HD Graphics 4200 integrated GPU and HDMI 1.4a. It comes with a gigabit Ethernet adapter and can be configured with one of three 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi adapters. The tablet half of the product weighs 1.8 pounds, and the keyboard dock weighs 3.48 pounds. The laptop is available now at prices starting at $899.
As it did with the HP 205 all-in-one, HP is targeting small businesses with the budget-priced HP 350 G1 laptop: Prices start at just $399—not bad for a notebook with a 15.6-inch display at a native resolution of 1366 by 768 pixels.

Prices for the HP 350 G1 will start at just $399, but will likely rise quickly as you add or upgrade components. 
Now, the base configuration consists of a dual-core Intel Celeron processor, 2GB of DDR3/1600 memory, and a 320GB hard drive, but other configurations are also available. TOSHIBA ANNOUNCES BRIGHT MODE HIGH SPEED MOVIE TECHNOLOGY FOR CMOS IMAGE SENSORS IN SMARTPHONES AND TABLETS

Bright Mode Enables 240 fps Equivalent High-Speed, Full-HD Movie Capture

Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc., (TAEC)*, a committed leader that collaborates with technology companies to create breakthrough designs, announces its Bright Mode technology. The Bright Mode CMOS image sensor technology allows smartphones and tablet PCs to record Full-HD video at 240 frames per second (fps), the industrys highest frame rate1. Additionally, Bright Mode realizes high quality, slow motion video playback at one-eighth the standard speed2 offering new dimensions in camera imaging during high-speed video.
"Bright Mode technology continues the Toshiba track record of delivering best-in-class image quality through continuous innovation," says Andrew Burt, vice president of the Image Sensor Business Unit, System LSI Group at TAEC. "Bright Mode technology contributes to a wide variety of movie applications, such as high-speed recording, slow-motion movie, and fast-action cameras. High-speed video recording requires a high-frame rate with short exposure time, which results in underexposed images. Bright Mode technology doubles the exposure time by adopting interlaced3 video output, not the progressive4 output that standard CMOS sensors use. Bright Mode also employs charge binning5, which doubles the electrical charge of each pixel, resulting in an image four times brighter than that from a CMOS sensor without Bright Mode. Toshiba will also provide an interlace-progressive conversion program that enables users to offer high quality progressive video with low deterioration, without changing frame rate.

Availability
Sample sensors incorporating Bright Mode will be available in Q1 2014.

Apple Samsung CEOs agree to mediation in U S patent fight

 Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics have agreed to attend a mediation session to be held on or before February 19, as they prepare to clash in court in March over smartphone patents.

Apple CEO Tim Cook and Samsung CEO Oh-Hyun Kwon will attend the session with in-house lawyers only, according to a Wednesday court filing. Their legal teams had met on January 6 to "discuss settlement opportunities," the filing read.

Neither company immediately return messages seeking comment.

Apple and Samsung are embroiled in a legal battle over smartphone patents across several countries that mirrors their global battle for supremacy in the mobile device market.

The technology rivals are facing a March trial date in the United States over Apples claims that Samsung infringed its patents.

In the last two years, Apple and Samsung have gone to trial twice in San Jose, California federal court, and juries have awarded Apple a total of roughly $930 million.

Apple said in court documents filed in December that it has paid its leading outside law firm approximately $60 million to wage patent litigation against Samsung.

The case is Apple Inc v. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, 11-1846.

Samsung unveils ATIV Book 9 2014 Edition Ultrabook and ATIV One 7 2014 Edition All in One PC

We already knew Samsung will be all over CES 2014 and it most certainly is! After announcing its brand new line-up of Televisions and Tablets, Samsung has just unveiled the ATIV Book 9 2014 Edition Ultrabook and ATIV One7 2014 Edition.
Samsung ATIV Book 9 2014 Edition features a 15.6-inch Full HD (1920×1080) display which offers a 20 percent brighter, 125 percent higher definition display than the previous generation Book 9 with wide-angle viewing angles, Intel’s 4th generation (Haswell) Core i5/i7 ULV CPUs, 8GB of RAM, 720p HD front facing camera and up to 1TB of flash storage. The ultrabook also comes with Windows 8.1 out of the box.
Samsung claims the new ATIV Book 9 2014 Edition ultrabook has a 14-hour battery life. Samsung actually downgraded the display resolution from 3200 x 1800, the one found on the previous generation 13.3-inch ATIV Book 9 Plus, to 1920 x 1080 just because of battery life as the previous model simply had terrible battery life. It measures in at 374.3 x 249.9 mm and weighs around 1.85 kg. The device will be offered in Solid Black, and will be available globally.Samsung_ATIV_Book9_2014_Edition_1
Alongside the ATIV Book 9 2014 Edition, Samsung also announced the ATIV One 7 2014 Edition All-in-One PC. The Ativ One 7 includes a 24-inch Full HD (1920×1080) display, Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and 1TB of HDD storage.

MTS bought the stake in OZON

Telecommunications operator MTS has announced the acquisition of the issued shares of the additional issue in OZON Holdings (OZON), a leading company in the Russian market of electronic commerce. Given SPO MTS acquires 10.8% stake in OZON for $ 75 million. In parallel with this transaction, holding AFK "System" (the main shareholder of MTS) also acquires 10.8% of the shares subject to the additional issue OZON for $ 75 million.

OZON owns five companies on the Russian market of electronic commerce: Russias largest online retailer OZON.ru with more than 750 million unique visitors per day; one of the largest Russian online shoe stores, clothing accessories and Sapato.ru; Russias leading online travel agency OZON.travel, delivery service online orders About Courier with more than 2,200 points of issuing orders in Russia and Kazakhstan; OZON Solutions - a company that provides services to companies who want to start their projects in e-commerce.
